Here are the top three stories in Johns Creek today:
- The Fulton County School Board unanimously voted to move forward with the third edition of the Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling program, an approximately $1.48 million program designed to sharpen instructors' skills in teaching reading. At the Feb. 23 school board meeting, this program and others will be voted on for formal approval. The curriculum, also called LETRS, trains teachers on the "five essential pillars of reading," which include phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Fulton County Schools Superintendent Mike Looney said "COVID-19 created a learning gap" and schools need to have more resources to address it. (Appen Media)
- The Johns Creek Police Department is investigating a reported robbery at gunpoint at the victims home on Vicarage Walk. According to the police report, on Feb. 2 the victim said three students taking his certified ethical hacking class entered his home after telling him they needed "urgent help." Once inside, the suspects pointed guns at the victim and reportedly stole his driver's license, debit cards, and Social Security card along with thousands of dollars' worth of guns, ammunition, technological devices, accessories, and Viagra supplements. The victim did not immediately call the police because he wanted to give the suspects a chance to return the stolen items. (Appen Media)
- From Mar. 1 to Mar. 3, the Fulton County Board of Health (FCBOH) Office of Emergency Preparedness is hosting a personal protective equipment (PPE) giveaway for the community. Donald Porter, Director of Emergency Preparedness at Fulton County Board of Health, said, "PPE isn't just for hospitals. These items are used in many businesses and homes across Fulton County." Porter also said that the giveaway ensures access to the supplies that help people stay "healthy as we continue to live with COVID-19 and other illnesses." The free event is open to the public from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. at 4700 North Point Pkwy in nearby Alpharetta. (Fulton County GA)
