Fulton To Dedicate Pavilion To Late County Commissioner

The ceremony honoring Dr. Robert E. "Bob" Fulton will be held March 24 at the Johns Creek Environmental Campus

JOHNS CREEK, GA -- Fulton County and Roswell leaders will dedicate a pavilion at the Johns Creek Environmental Campus to the late County Commissioner Robert E. "Bob" Fulton.

The dedication for Fulton, who helped develop the campus in collaboration with Roswell and surrounding communities, will be held 11 a.m. Friday, March 24 at 8100 Holcomb Bridge Road.

The event will also feature an official ribbon cutting for trails in the area. The pavilion and the plaque honoring Fulton were made possible by a donation from Veolia Water in partnership with Fulton County.

“It’s fitting that a facility that the late Commissioner Bob Fulton championed during his years with Fulton County pays a lasting tribute to his community efforts,” said District 1 Commissioner Liz Hausmann. “Bob Fulton envisioned a facility that both served the water treatment needs of North Fulton and teaches residents about what is being done to ensure the safety of water, one of our most vital resources. Bob would also be very pleased with the recreational opportunities this partnership with the city of Roswell offers our community.”

Fulton County and the city of Roswell collaborated on efforts to extend and connect nature trails within the JCEC’s footprint in Garrard Landing Park.

“Bob Fulton was a champion for parks and trails,” said Roswell Mayor Jere Wood. “He would be proud of this project”

Veolia North America, Fulton County's long-term environmental partner and operator of the Johns Creek Environmental Campus, provided financial support to construct the pavilion.

"Veolia proudly supports Dr. Robert Fulton's vision for the Johns Creek Environmental Campus and is committed to enhancing community opportunities for environmental education and interaction with our precious natural resources," said John Gibson, president & COO of Veolia's Municipal and Commercial Business.

Bob Fulton served as a Fulton County commissioner representing a district in North Fulton from 1995 until his death in 2004 at the age of 72. He also served as an engineering professor and researcher at Georgia Tech.

As a county commissioner, Dr. Fulton worked to bring several major improvements to his district including the construction of the Spruill Oaks and Ocee public libraries, transportation improvements, the acquisition of park land, funding for Johns Creek Greenway Park and Newtown Park.

The JCEC is located on a 43-acre site off Holcomb Bridge Road in the City of Roswell adjacent to the Chattahoochee River.

In July 2014, the county and the city of Roswell entered into an intergovernmental agreement to allow three acres of land owned by Fulton County to be used as part of Garrard Landing Park.

The agreement allowed the city to expand the footprint of Garrard Park at no additional cost to taxpayers and to connect park trails to those on the Johns Creek Environmental Campus.
