Fulton Schools Committee to Review Proposed Math Materials

The Learning Resources Committee for Mathematics will review vendors of new materials for various math courses.

The Georgia Department of Education recently approved new math courses that offer a traditional/discrete option for Georgia high school students.

A longtime proponent of more “traditionally taught” math instruction rather than the “integrated” approach, Fulton County Schools will offer traditional math courses in all high schools next year.

In preparation, the district is convening its Learning Resources Committee for Mathematics to review vendors of new materials for Algebra I, Geometry, Advanced Algebra and Pre-Calculus courses.

The school system’s Science Technology Engineering Mathematics (STEM) team preselected 10 vendors from GADOE’s provider list for the committee for review.

The committee will evaluate the vendor materials and select resources to be reviewed by all teachers at the local school level during April and then displayed for public comment by parents and the community in May.

A recommendation for vendor(s) will be submitted to the school board for their consideration in June. Materials selected will go into effect for the 2015-2016 school year.

Similarly, the process for selecting new resources for K-8 Mathematics and 9-12 Mathematics (other than Algebra I, Geometry, Advanced Algebra, and Pre-Calculus) will begin in late May. A similar committee will evaluate materials and then make recommendations to the school board, with public review occurring before the adoption.
