Garner Elected Vice President of Fulton County Commission

Joan Garner serves District 4 on the Board of Commissioners.

ATLANTA, GA -- At the Fulton County Commission's Jan. 4 meeting, board members elected Joan Garner to serve as vice-chairman.

The move came the same day Garner was sworn in to begin a third term and second full term as a Fulton County commissioner for District 4.

"I am honored to serve as vice chair of the Fulton County Board of Commissioners,” she said. “During the past six years on the Commission, I have enjoyed bringing people together to find shared solutions. I value the fact that Fulton County is home to many diverse people and communities. I look forward to serving them all."

Garner has worked in the non-profit sector and been an active participant in many community leadership positions. She currently serves as third vice president for the Association County Commissioners of Georgia.

She has been active in the National Association of Counties, serving that organization in many capacities including as Health Steering Committee chair. She has served on the boards of the Atlanta Beltline Affordable Housing, Metropolitan Community Development Corporation, Council of Foundations, United Way of Metropolitan Atlanta, Lambda Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Southerners on New Ground, Georgia Share Funding Exchange, Southern Reinvestment Ventures and Fourth Tuesday Incorporated.

She was appointed to the Transition Team of Mayor-Elect Maynard Jackson and the Atlanta Olympic Citizen’s Advisory Commission. Garner also served as senior advisor on Gay and Lesbian Issues under Mayor Jackson.

First elected to the County Commission in 2010, Garner represents District 4, which encompasses the heart of the Atlanta, Midtown, and neighborhoods west of downtown Atlanta to Fulton Industrial Boulevard.

She is a native of Washington, D.C., but has lived in Atlanta since 1978. Garner earned a bachelor's degree in English from the University of the District of Columbia and a master's degree in Organizational Communication from Howard University.
