Graduating Fulton Seniors Earn National Merit Awards

Sixteen additional students have been named 2018 National Merit Scholars.

JOHNS CREEK, GA — An additional 16 Fulton County seniors have been named 2018 National Merit Scholars, the school system said Thursday. Along with obtaining the prestigious National Merit Scholar distinction, these students earn $2,500 cash scholarships funded by the National Merit Corp. to use at the college or university of their choice.

The latest winners are Anthony J. Elengickal and Jessica Zhang of Alpharetta High School; Madhav Ghatpande, Kevin Huang and Richard Xie of Chattahoochee High School; Neharika Bhatia, Nathaniel Fulmer, Sabrina Elson and Lauren Leigh Garrett of Johns Creek High School; Sunny Jin and Abhisri Ramesh of Milton High School and Daphne Manning, Mehal Churiwal,Joshua Yao Li, Seong Hyun Ryoo and Anirudh Thatavarty of Northview High School.

Throughout the spring, the National Merit Corp. announces winners of scholarships in several rounds determined by the source funding the awards. Earlier this month, 13 students were named finalists for scholarships funded by corporations, and today, National Merit Corp. announced finalists who are receiving awards funded by the organization itself. The final two rounds of winners, which are for those earning scholarships sponsored by specific colleges, will be announced June 6 and July 16 by the organization.

Qualifying students were identified through exceptionally high scores on the PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. In addition to having a record of high academic performance, they were endorsed by their principal and earned high SAT scores confirming their earlier qualifying test performance.
