Hanukkah 4 Houston Helps Congregations Devastated By Harvey

Congregation Dor Tamid hosted fundraisers for the Jewish Community Center in the Houston area, which was damaged by the powerful hurricane.

JOHNS CREEK, GA — The holidays are a time of year when the spirit of giving is abundant and members of Congregation Dor Tamid in Johns Creek are no exception.

When Hurricane Harvey decimated the Houston, Texas, area with unprecedented flooding and winds, congregation members immediately accepted the call to action from the Greater Houston Food Bank by sending truck loads of supplies to families in need.

But that call of action hasn’t stopped, as many displaced families entered the holiday season. So when Dor Tamid was asked to help out again and raise funds as part of the Hanukkah 4 Houston campaign benefiting the Jewish Community Center in the Braeswood Area, one of the hardest hit areas, they responded with a resounding "yes!"

“Of course we jumped at the opportunity to help the community in Houston," Rob Lederman, Dor Tamid president, said. "We have quite a few families in our congregation that are from the Houston area or have friends and family members that live there. When you see the pictures of the destruction you know that you have to help in anyway you can.”

In less than two weeks the Congregation Dor Tamid Religious School Students raised more than $1,100 by
bringing in Tzedakah each week to class and the sixth-grade class hosted a bake sales during their annual Hanukkah Party.

In addition, all of the funds that are raised are being matched by a generous donor, allowing Dor Tamid to send more than $2,200. All of the proceeds are being sent directly to the Houston JCC along with funds from the Atlanta JCC and other Jewish Communities across the country.
