Hooch, Northview, Johns Creek Named AP Honor Schools

SANDY SPRINGS, GA — All traditional high schools in the Fulton County School System have been named AP Honor Schools. The honor, given by the Georgia Department of Education, recognized schools that are "leaders in offering students the most challenging curricula available," the system said. Fulton County has 15 traditional high schools and two non-traditional high schools.

The 2018 AP Honor Schools awards are based on the class of 2017’s testing results and are grouped into six categories: AP STEM Schools, AP STEM Achievement Schools, AP Humanities Schools, AP Merit Schools, AP Challenge Schools, and AP Access and Support Schools.

AP STEM Schools

An impressive 15 schools were named AP STEM Schools, a category that recognizes schools with students testing in at least two AP math courses and two AP science courses. The STEM categories recognize high schools with achievement in AP Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics courses.

AP STEM Achievement Schools

AP STEM Achievement Schools go beyond the AP STEM Schools category to recognize schools that have at least 40 percent of math and science test-takers earning scores of 3 or higher. In Fulton, nine received the distinction.

AP Humanities Schools

The AP Humanities Schools distinction recognizes schools with students testing in all of the following AP courses: at least one English/language arts course, two social science courses, one fine arts course and one world language course. Thirteen Fulton schools earned the distinction.

Nine Fulton schools received recognition as AP Merit Schools. The AP Merit distinction recognizes those with at least 20 percent of students taking AP exams and with at least half of those exams receiving a score of 3 or higher.

AP Challenge Schools

An AP Challenge School is a distinction that recognizes schools with fewer than 900 students offering AP classes in core content areas. In Fulton, one school earned this achievement: Hapeville Career Academy.

AP Access and Support Schools

Schools with at least 30 percent of their AP exams taken by students who identified themselves as African- American and/or Hispanic and 30 percent of all AP exams earning scores of 3 or higher. Two schools in Fulton earned this distinction.

Advanced Placement classes offer rigorous college-level learning options to students in high school. The College Board administers AP exams each spring, with scores ranging from 1 to 5. Students who receive a 3, 4 or 5 on AP exams are eligible to receive college credit or may be exempt from some introductory college courses.
