Ivy Bridge Academy Debate Students Perform Well at Georgetown University Tournament

Ivy Bridge Academy Debate Students won top awards competing against other Middle and High School Students nationally.

Ivy Bridge Academy’s (IBA) Debate program traveled to Georgetown University Oct. 7-8 to compete in the Georgetown University Tournament against Middle School and High School students from across the United States.

IBA’s students performed exceptionally well and we would like to recognize our students’ for their great efforts and achievements. The topic resolved for this National Debate Tournament was: Deployment of anti-missile systems is in South Korea’s best interest.

Nine teams competed in the Middle School division with five students competing for the Individual Speaker Award. IBA had two Junior Varsityteams compete in the tournament and 5 Junior Varsity Individual Speakers. At the Varsity level, IBA had two Individual Speakers. All students who participated finished in the top twenty with many winning awards in the top ten. All Middle School students and two Junior Varsity teams advanced to the elimination rounds.

IBA debaters excelled and placed in the top 10 at all levels: Middle School, Junior Varsity and Varsity. Sanjh Mahatme, a local 7th grade student received third place for Individual Speakerand Vinayak Menon, a 7th grader at Riverwatch MS finished fifth. Five individual speakers finished in the top ten.

The IBA Middle School team of Omer Mujawar (Autrey Mill Middle School) and Matthew Kim won second place overall while teams Bobby Missell/Vinayak Menon (Riverwatch MiddleSchool) and Aanan Biswas/Aalif Biswas (Autrey Mill Middle School) both won third place. IBA had nine teams place in the top 20 overall at the Middle School level with six of these teams in the top ten.

Junior Varsity speaker Rishi Gowda of Johns Creek High School won second place overall while Brian Shon of Alpharetta High School won 4th place. Henry Xuan placed in fifth place fromLambert High school and seventh place winner was Sri Pinnamareddy also at Lambert HS.

IBA’s Junior Varsity team, Henry Xuan and Sri Pinnamareddy from LambertHS placed third.Brian Shon and Rohit Jivangikar from Alpharetta HS placed fifth. IBA’s Varsity speakers from both from South Forsyth placed in the top 5. Sudhan Chitgopkar won first place and Adithya Ramanujam won fifth place.

Ivy Bridge Academy’s students compete in both Regional and National Debate Tournaments. Each competition gives the debaters a chance to continue to learn, improve, work together and demonstrate their accomplishments among their peers.
