Smoke alarms awoke the pair early Sunday, allowing them to escape a fire that damaged their two-story home, the city said on Sunday.

When the alarms sounded just before 1:55 a.m. Sept. 20, the couple, who were sleeping in their bedroom on the main floor, discovered their home was full of smoke, the city added.

They fled the home, located on Brier Mill Court, with their three dogs. Once outside, they saw the roof and deck on fire, and called 911.

Johns Creek Fire Department responded with three fire engines, two ladder trucks and a rescue unit. The fire was extinguished about 4:30 a.m. The woman was taken to Emory Johns Creek Hospital where she was treated for smoke inhalation and released.

The cause is under investigation, but does not appear to be arson-related.
