Johns Creek Crews Start Process of Replacing Bell Road Bridge

Crews have started preliminary work on replacing the Bell Road bridge across Cauley Creek in Johns Creek, which will be down to one lane starting in late spring into next winter.

The bridge was built in 1961 and is showing its age, said Public Works Director Tom Black.

“It’s an old bridge and the concrete wasn’t as good, and the design wasn’t as good as we have now,” he said. “When it was built, these were rural roads and they just weren’t intended for the heavy traffic they carry now.”

One lane will remain open because there are no good alternative routes nearby, and because it carries a high volume of traffic, about 10,000 vehicles per day. Officials with schools and emergency response agencies have been notified.

Temporary traffic signals will be posted at either end of the construction area to ensure orderly traffic flow.

The new bridge will include a 10-foot trail on one side and a 5-foot-wide sidewalk on the other. The existing bridge has no room for pedestrians or bicyclists.
