Dr. Nazeera Dawood on Thursday said she will run for the Post 5 seat, which has been vacant since last year when former Council member Kelly Stewart resigned to run for the Georgia House District 50 seat.
“I have been a leader all my life and have a true passion for our community,” Dr. Dawood said. “As a graduate of the Johns Creek Citizens Police Academy...and an active Rotarian, I have a proven dedication to our area.”

Describing herself as a fiscal conservative, Dr. Dawood said she will work to make sure residents’ tax dollars are spent wisely, and she will “oppose all tax increases.”
“As our next City Council member, I proposed working collaboratively with key stakeholders to address our transportation needs,” she added. “I will support new technologies to keep our traffic flowing efficiently.”
After graduating from medical school, Dr. Dawood earned her masters in public health from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She worked at Emory School of Medicine in Atlanta and today works as an advisor on preventative medicine for Fulton County.
Dr. Dawood is also a member of the Rotary Club of Emory Druid Hills, a Leadership Johns Creek graduate and Leadership Johns Creek Student Leadership Program’s school liaison for Northview High School.
She has received commendations such as the We Are Emory, 100 Community Builders, a Dr. Nazeera Dawood Appreciation Day proclamation from the Fulton County Commission and has received a Public Service Award from the American Tamil Medical Association.
She was also named the 2015 Rotarian of the Year in her club council.
The city of Johns Creek decided to wait until November to hold the special election to fill the Post 5 seat, as well as the vacant Post 2 seat. Post 2 was vacated when former Council member Brad Raffensperger resigned to also run for the House District 50 race, which he won in a runoff.
The special election will coincide with the general election -- Tuesday, Nov. 3 -- in which Posts 4 (held by Bob Gray) and 6 (held by Steve Broadbent) are up for re-election.
