Johns Creek Girls Basketball Off to a Great Start

Our JV Girls basketball team opened their season with a 55 to 23 victory over rival . An impressive offensive explosion was lead by freshman Katie Wickes, Madison Faerber, Courtney Poole and sure shot sophomore Marie Fithian.

What was most impressive about this victory was the selfless team effort shown by our girls, passing the ball to open teammates for great looks, a smothering defense where double teams were the norm, and great rebounding in the paint by starter Krista Hughes. The bench came up huge as well, showing the team’s impressive depth with Reilly Poitevent, Maggie Sledjeski, Hayden Merrick, Caroline Mock and Kendal Mansfield.

Our Johns Creek Varsity Girls team is now 3-0 on the season and have the longest winning streak in Johns Creek Girls Varsity basketball history. Their latest victory was also over rival Chattahoochee, and it certainly was a thriller. Being down nine points early in the third quarter, the girls tightened up their defense and allowed just 14 points total in the second half, and just five points in the fourth quarter to rally back to beat last year’s state semifinalists, 41-39. 

All three victories were come-from-behind at half, where the defense had worn their opponent down to succumb them to double digit turnovers which led to transition baskets and high percentage opportunities.

If you have yet to see the girls play, they play a very athletic, fast-paced pressing defensive styled game, and share the ball offensively like a team that has played together for years. 

The team is led by senior Sierra Martin, senior captain Ellie Kaplan and juniors Allie Buchalski and Megan Froats. There are often two to four freshmen on the court at the same time, led by tireless freshman starters at guard, Courtney Colavito and Dani Majkowski. The bench is deep, with impact players freshman Hannah Froats, Katie Wickes and Courtney Poole and varsity experienced junior Molly Speese and senior Tiran Goldstein. 

The bench is deep, the scoring is very well diversified, and the style of play extremely entertaining. Come on out and cheer them on!
