Johns Creek Home Invasion Suspects Arrested in Atlanta

The armed suspects, demanding cash and jewelry, pistol-whipped a resident and her housekeeper during the roughly 40-minute encounter.

JOHNS CREEK, GA -- The men accused of attacking a woman and her housekeeper during a violent home invasion in Johns Creek have been apprehended.

The suspects, identified as Kenneth M. Hayes, 28, and Andraus Betts, 23, were tracked down in southwest Atlanta late Tuesday afternoon by an officer with the Atlanta Police Department, the agency confirmed to Patch.

The terrifying ordeal began around 1:30 p.m. Aug. 16 when the suspects entered a home in the 5300 block of Chelsen Woods Drive, brandished firearms and demanded the occupants of the residence to hand over cash, jewelry and other valuables, said Johns Creek police spokesperson Capt. Chris Byers.

The suspects spent about 40 minutes rummaging inside the home, Byers added. The incident turned violent when the two men used the firearms to "pistol-whip" the victims before fleeing the scene with the housekeeper's cell phone and a Mercedes stolen from the home.

Byers said both victims were transported to an area hospital where they were treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Hours after fleeing the scene, an officer with the Atlanta Police Department was notified by security at 3131 Campbellton Road in the southwest part of the city that a white Dodge Challenger and a white 550 S Class Mercedes were off-loading flat-screen televisions between the vehicles, said police spokesperson Sgt. Warren Pickard.

Atlanta police caught up with the Mercedes, which was observed leaving the Campbellton Road location and going westbound on S.R. 166. The officers ran the license plate of the vehicle, which advised the Mercedes was stolen during the Johns Creek home invasion, Pickard said.

Officers pulled over the car in the area of 2950 Springdale Road, arrested the suspects and took possession of the stolen vehicle. Pickard said Johns Creek police were notified and detectives responded to the scene to process the car.

Recovered during the investigation was a Ruger SR9, which Pickard said was possibly used in the home invasion. Byers also said items stolen from the robbery were discovered on the suspects at the time of the arrests.

The suspects have initially been charged with theft by receiving a stolen vehicle, as investigators have to work backwards to tie them to the home invasion, Byers said.

"All they are guilty of now is being in a stolen car," he added.

Byers added detectives are in the process of securing warrants for the suspects.
