Johns Creek Organizes Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day

Johns Creek residents can drop off toxic, domestic products at the city’s Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day.

The city will be collecting the items from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11 at The Home Depot parking lot at 5950 State Bridge Road near Medlock Bridge Road.

“Many products we use every day – cleaning supplies, paint, or pesticides – can contaminate the environment if they’re just thrown away,” said James Swope, Johns Creek’s solid waste manager. “They can even be dangerous to store.”

Swope said the city is especially pleased to be accepting fluorescent lights this year for the first time, including those curly-cue lamp bulbs.

“We have a special machine called a Bulb Eater to crush and recycle them,” he said. “There is no other really environmentally good way to recycle fluorescent bulbs, which contain mercury. So this is a special service we’re providing our citizens.”

Residents are asked to save your electronics for the Nov. 15 at a document-shredding event at Panera Bread at 11475 Medlock Bridge Road and for Bring One for the Chipper, a Christmas tree recycling program, at The Home Depot on Jan. 3, 2015.

Materials accepted are:

• Fluorescent lights
• Paints, solvents, cleaners and aerosols
• Herbicides and pesticides
• Motor oil and anti-freeze
• Mercury
• Batteries
• Propane cylinders with functioning valves
• Fire extinguishers and smoke detectors
• Containers of fats, oils and grease from cooking

Materials not accepted:

• medical waste and needles
• pharmaceuticals
• trash and non-hazardous items
• electronics

Pre-registration is required and space is limited.

Because of the potential volume of hazardous waste and affiliated costs, the event is limited to Johns Creek residents. If you are not sure if your address falls within the city limits of Johns Creek, visit the Confirm Address page on the city’s website.
