Johns Creek Police Taps Detective as ‘Officer of Quarter’

Matthew Stocks led successful undercover operations.

The Johns Creek Police "Officer of the Quarter" award has been given to Corporal Matthew Stocks for his exceptional work during the last quarter of 2010, announced Police Chief Ed Densmore.

Stocks, a 14-year law enforcement veteran and native of Augusta, was selected by his superiors and peers for his exemplary detective work in the department’s Criminal Investigations Division.

“From the beginning, Stocks has led the JCPD in many of its undercover operations, helping successfully close dozens of investigations,” said Densmore.  “He’s an exceptional officer and detective.”

A 1997 graduate of Augusta State University, Stocks earned a B.A. in psychology with a concentration in criminal justice before entering the Georgia Police Academy.  Upon graduation from the academy, he joined the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, working initially in patrol and then investigating violent crimes.

He joined Alpharetta Police Department in 2003, working in the patrol and crime suppression units. It was there he was first selected to serve on the Office of National Drug Control Policy’s High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area task force in Atlanta.

Joining the JCPD with its inaugural squad in 2008, Stocks continued his work on the Atlanta HIDTA task force, in addition to his detective duties with the JCPD’s Special Investigations Unit.  He recently transferred to uniform patrol to pursue other avenues in his law enforcement career.

“I’m very humbled to receive this award,” said Stocks.  “Undercover work doesn’t usually get noticed too much, but that’s the nature of the assignment.  I really appreciate my work being recognized, in this way, by my peers.”
