He’s also served as a reserve deputy and reserve officer for several law enforcement offices, including the Fulton and Gwinnett County sheriff’s departments and the Lawrenceville and Norcross police departments.

Cowart graduated from the Georgia Public Safety Training Center’s Basic Mandate Law Enforcement program in 1994 and later suffered a spinal injury while working for the Fulton sheriff’s office.

“I’m excited about this opportunity to serve the people of Fulton County,” Cowart said. “As sheriff, I will look to implement policies that maximize taxpayer resources while simultaneously improving processes and procedures. I’ve identified a litany of improvement opportunities through conversations with current and former law enforcement officers from Fulton and surrounding counties.”

Cowart also said he wants to improve the Fulton County jury duty experience by ensuring parking lots and bus service transports for jurors are “safer and more secure” than they are today.

Cowart was employed in a family owned construction business until 1994 when he opened up his own real estate company.

in 2001, he founded Military Vehicle Specialties, LLC, which buys, refurbishes and sells used military trucks and equipment. The company in 2006 donated a M114 armored personnel carrier to the Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Department to aid the agency during SWAT situations.

Cowart is also president of DDCB, Inc., a family-owned real estate company, founder of Cowart Development Corporation and president of Cowart & Cowart Builders LLC.

Along with his service as a reserve deputy and reserve officer, he also was a member of the Rotary Club of Peachtree Corners from 1993 to 2003, including serving three years as club secretary.
