Johns Creek Runoff: Coughlin, Weaver, Elwood Unofficial Winners

JOHNS CREEK, GA — There will be two new and one returning Johns Creek City Council members after voters took to the polls Tuesday in the General Municipal Runoff Election after no candidate received majority of the votes in November.

For Johns Creek City Council Post 2, Brian Weaver took home the seat Tuesday with 2,887 votes over competitor Dilip Tunki who received 2,162 votes.

Johns Creek Post 4 incumbent Chris Coughlin received 3,160 votes, and his competitor Marybeth Cooper had 1,732 votes in the runoff.

Johns Creek Post 6 went to Erin Elwood who had 2,720 votes over competitor Issure C. Yang, who had 2,219 votes in the runoff.

More than 13,000 voters participated in the Dec. 3 runoff in Fulton County in Johns Creek, Roswell and College Park, or about 10 percent of registered voters eligible to vote in these races.

The Johns Creek City Council election is for the council seats of Post 2, Post 4, and Post 6.

Out of the 325,889 registered voters in the Nov. 5 Fulton County races, 38,936 voted, or nearly 12 percent. View the Nov. 5 election results.

Municipal Elections are non-partisan and held in accordance with Title 2 of the Georgia Election Code. Candidates run at-large and are voted on by the registered voters; the candidate who receives the majority of votes cast wins their respective seat. Public officials have staggered four-year terms in Johns Creek, with elections every two years (Post 2, 4 and 6) and (Post 1, 3, 5 and mayor).

In 2018, the Johns Creek city charter was changed legislatively to reflect term limits for elected officials. Effective with the 2019 elections, neither the mayor nor council member shall serve for more than three consecutive terms, four-year terms of office and shall not include any partial terms of office. In addition, no terms of office served prior to January 1, 2020 and no terms of office served as council member shall be considered in determining if a person has served more than three consecutive terms of office.
