New Turf Fields Coming To Johns Creek Parks

The cost for the installation of the fields at Shakerag and Newtown parks will be paid for using the parks bond passed by voters in 2016.

JOHNS CREEK, GA -- The Johns Creek City Council at its July 24 meeting approved a contract to install synthetic turf fields at two parks.

The city will utilize the services of Field Turf USA, INC to oversee the installation of two fields at Newtown Park and one at Shakerag Park.

“I am thrilled with the decision of the City Council to move forward with this significant improvement to our parks,” said Mayor Mike Bodker. “Our residents will be able to greatly benefit with more field utilization for the upcoming sports seasons and year round.”

The field conversion at Newtown Park includes the main soccer field and lacrosse field. At Shakerag Park, the track field will be converted to synthetic turf. Once construction begins, installation is anticipated to take up to 30 days.

Synthetic turf field installation is consistent with the recommendations of the city's Recreation and Parks Strategic Plan. The new additions at both locations will also allow the upcoming sports seasons to occur with minimal disruption and will enable leagues to increase their play time in conditions that would have otherwise been lost to rain.

Field Turf USA, Inc. is the same company contracted by the Fulton County School System for the design and installation of synthetic turf fields at its facilities. The fields at Newtown Park and Shakerag Park will be designed and installed according to the same specifications and regulations used by the school system.

According to the agreement approved by the City Council, the cost for installation of the three fields will not exceed $2 million. The parks bond, which was approved by voters in November 2016, will fund the project.
