New Year Ushers In New Fulton School Board President, Vice President

Linda McClain of District 5 was elected president while Linda Bryant of District 4 was tapped to serve as vice president.

The first official school board meeting of 2015 resulted in newly elected officers and four members beginning new four-year terms.

Outgoing vice president Linda McCain, who represents District 5, was elected president of the Fulton County School Board for a two-year term at today’s meeting. Linda Bryant, who represents District 4, was elected to a one-year term as vice president.

“I am blessed to work with such great leadership and strong advocates of students and educators,” McCain said after the unanimous vote was taken in her favor. “This school board has a depth of experience and I’m excited and proud to serve on a board that focuses on students and enriching the quality of education in Fulton County.”

McCain, who represents Johns Creek and parts of Alpharetta, was first elected to the school board in 2010 and in May 2014 was reelected to her second four-year term which began this month.

Before serving on the school board, she advocated for children and public education for more than 12 years as a member of local school advisory councils and PTAs in her children’s schools.

During her time on the school board, McCain has promoted the efficient and conservative use of taxpayer dollars and the increased accountability of school system stakeholders. She was a member of the board of directors of the Fulton County Schools Employees’ Pension Fund and is a current board member of the Fulton Education Foundation. In December, she was appointed to serve on Governor Nathan Deal’s Education Advisory Board.

Vice president Bryant joined the school board in 1993 and is in her fifth term of office. She represents areas in Chattahoochee Hills, College Park, Fairburn, Palmetto, Union City and southwest Atlanta, and is a former teacher, PTA president, local school advisory committee chair, and chair of the Superintendent’s Advisory Committee.

She is a past member of the Fulton Education Foundation Board of Directors and the Fulton County Employees’ Pension Board and currently is serving on the board of the Fulton County Employees’ Charitable Fund.

In addition to the officer elections, three members began new four-year terms of office. Julia Bernath (District 7) and Katie Reeves (District 2) both begin their fifth terms while Catherine Maddox (District 6) begins her third term.
