Officer David Freeman was on the thoroughfare assisting with the closure of an additional lane on the southbound side of the highway to accommodate construction work, said Alpharetta Department of Public Safety spokesperson George Gordon.

The construction work is connected to the rebuilding of the Encore Parkway bridge over the highway. Gordon said the patrol vehicle, which had its emergency lights activated, was sitting in the second from left lane when it was struck from behind by a passenger vehicle occupied by a male driver.

Crews were in the process of placing cones along the highway to prepare for the lane closures when the collision occurred. Freeman was taken to an area hospital for observation and "will be fine," Gordon added.

"Signage has been placed along GA-400 southbound advising motorist of the lane closures," Gordon added.

Roswell police investigated the crash, the Alpharetta police spokesperson said.
