Park Place Offers Activities For Johns Creek Residents Over 62

JOHNS CREEK, GA -- Park Place programs and activities are designed for Johns Creek residents aged 62 and older. Johns Creek residents will be given first priority for all programs. If additional registration is needed to conduct a class/program or to achieve a more enriching experience for Johns Creek residents, registration may be opened to non-resident Park Place guests.

Park Place at Newtown School is located inside Newtown Park at 3125 Old Alabama Road and is open Monday – Thursday, 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.; Friday, 9 a.m. – noon; First and Third Thursday of the month open until 8 p.m.; Second and Fourth Saturday of the month, 9 a.m. to noon.

2019 Golden Games Registration now available

It’s that time of year again when registration is available for the 25th Anniversary of the Fulton Golden Games. Registration forms are now available at Park Place, so stop by today to pick up yours and join us for some fun!

Completed registration forms/payments may be dropped off at Park Place during our business hours. If you stop by when we are closed, please put your application in our LOCKED (incoming only) mailbox located at the circle turnaround/flag pole directly outside of Park Place.

We are looking forward to another great year of events, camaraderie and fun, so be sure to sign up soon and share with all your friends! Opening Ceremonies are Wednesday, April 24.

Monthly Movie
Wednesday & Thursday, March 20 & 21

Join us for our monthly movie, “Green Book” (Academy Award-winning Movie of the Year for 2018) on Wednesday, March 20 at 1 p.m. and/or Thursday, March 21 at 5:30 p.m. We will transform one of our rooms into a movie theater, complete with free popcorn and drinks.

About the film:
When Tony Lip (Mortensen), a bouncer from an Italian-American neighborhood in the Bronx, is hired to drive Dr. Don Shirley (Ali), a world-class Black pianist, on a concert tour from Manhattan to the Deep South, they must rely on "The Green Book" to guide them to the few establishments that were then safe for African-Americans. Confronted with racism, danger-as well as unexpected humanity and humor-they are forced to set aside differences to survive and thrive on the journey of a lifetime.

AARP Smart Driver Class
Wednesday, March 20, 9 a.m.

Join us on Wednesday, March 20 for AARP Driver Safety class from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

This 6-hour classroom course will provide you with defensive driving techniques and strategies as well as an overview of current Georgia driving laws. Space is limited and preregistration is required. Cost is $15 for AARP members; $20 for non-members. Please bring a bag lunch.

Meet & Greet
Thursday, March 21, 11:30 a.m.

Are you new to Park Place? Curious about what our adult activity center can do for you? Visit us on Wednesday, Thursday, March 21 from 11:30 a.m. - noon to learn more about what Park Place has to offer. The Park Place Hospitality Committee will answer all your questions and you will receive a gift bag from Park Place for attending.

Newcomers are encouraged to enjoy a potluck lunch immediately after the meet-and-greet event. New participants do not need to bring food items for potluck.

Art Workshop
Saturday, March 23

Join us for our upcoming art workshop on Saturday, March 23 at 10 a.m. Led by Anita from the Johns Creek Arts Center, you will complete a fun, seasonal work of art in one session with all instruction and supplies provided. The cost is just $10 per person/class. All levels of experience are welcome at this 90-minute class.

Technoacademy Free Computer Tutoring
Saturday, March 23, 10 - 11:30 a.m.

Do you wish there was someone out there who could offer some free, one-on-one, patient guidance with a technology need you have? Technoacademy can help!

This group of student volunteers will be at Park Place on the fourth Saturday of each month to provide you the assistance you need. Be sure to bring your tablet, phone or other “device” with you for the best possible outcome. Tutors are available on a first come, first served basis.

Please call or stop by Park Place to let us know you’re coming, so enough volunteers are available.

Book Club
Tuesday, March 26, 10 a.m.

The Park Place Book Club will meet on Tuesday, March 26 at 10 a.m. at Park Place to discuss "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn," by Betty Smith. Everyone is welcome to join this long-running club; light refreshments will be served.

Lunch & Learn
Thursday, March 28, noon

Join us for a program presented by Green Lawn Cemetery/Roswell Funeral Home: Your Life, Your Legacy. This interactive presentation will touch on the advantages of prearranging a funeral, including the benefits of planning and steps involved in the planning process. Lunch will be provided – RSVP is required.

AARP Tax Aide returns to Park Place

AARP Tax Aide is returning to Park Place again this year, providing certified tax preparers to prepare both Federal and State of Georgia tax returns. This is at no cost to you and is available only by appointment. Appointments are available on Thursdays beginning Feb. 7 and continuing through April 11. Please call us at 678-512-3430 to schedule an appointment, or you may stop by our front desk to sign up during our open hours.

New! Mahjong
Tuesdays, 12:45 p.m.

Join our new group of interested Mahjong players at 12:45 p.m. on Tuesdays right here at Park Place. This is a group of experienced and new players.

Please stop by if you are interested in beginning to play at Park Place on Tuesday afternoons. We will have one set available for use; if you would like to bring a game board to share while here, feel free. Join us!

Wednesday Walkers, 10 a.m.

The Wednesday Walkers are still going strong, and they welcome YOU to join them any Wednesday at 9 am on the Park Place patio for a trip or two around Newtown Park. The group gathers for a warm up first, and then you may proceed at your own pace, and enjoy the company of others while staying fit. Questions? Glad Memories, Caregiver Support Group

Are you caring for a loved one with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease? Are you indirectly involved in their care through support or help? Do you find yourself at the end of the rope at times? Join us on the first Thursday of the month from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. right here at Park Place. This is a confidential group of people who share the burden experienced by caregivers of dementia/Alzheimer’s patients.

DeKalb Farmers Market
Tuesday, April 9
Join us on Tuesday, April 9 as we visit the DeKalb Farmers market in Decatur, Georgia. Whether you are interested in produce, dairy, floral, bakery, international products or just about anything else, they seem to have it all! 10,000 people shop there every week and 20,000 enjoy take-out or dine-in at the restaurant. We will enjoy a guided tour to include the retail areas of the market. We’ll learn about the origins of their foods and some products they make. After the tour, there will be plenty of time to shop and enjoy lunch at the market.

At least one week before the program/activity starts, complete a registration form and submit it, along with any required fee, one of three ways:

  1. Register in person, Monday – Thursday, 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.; Friday, 9 a.m. – noon; First and Third Thursday of the month open until 8 p.m.; Second and Fourth Saturday of the month, 9 a.m. to noon
  2. Mail your registration form and check (payable to the instructor) to: Park Place at Newtown School, 3125 Old Alabama Road, Johns Creek, GA 30022
  3. If the Center is closed or you simply don't want to get out of your car, drop your form and check (no cash, please) in our locked drop box, located in the circle drive in front of Park Place.
