Recycle Cooking Grease, Shred Documents On Feb. 11 in Johns Creek

Keep Johns Creek Beautiful's event will be held at Panera Bread on Medlock Bridge Road.

JOHNS CREEK, GA -- If you have a mountain of sensitive documents and containers of used cooking oil taking up valuable storage space around your home, then Keep Johns Creek Beautiful has the perfect solution for you.

The organization will team up with the city of Johns Creek and Panera Bread Company to offer a free document shredding service to residents. The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11 at Panera Bread, which is at 11715 Medlock Bridge Road.

Along with turning over your documents for safe disposal, you will also have the opportunity to recycle cooking oils and grease, fluorescent bulbs and donate gently-used clothes and shoes.

Properly disposing of cooking grease prevents these items from being poured down the drain, which can clog pipes and cause sewage to back up into streets and homes.

Fluorescent tubes and curly compact fluorescent bulbs contain mercury, which lingers in the environment for years. Keep Johns Creek Beautiful has special equipment that destroys the lights and stores the material and gases for recovery later by a certified fluorescent-light recycling firm.

Documents at the event will be shred on-site, and all of the paper will be recycled. Donated clothing and shoes will be donated to American Kidney Services. Please note the event does not include electronics recycling.

This event is free for Johns Creek residents; however, there is a fee of up to $5 to recycle fluorescent bulbs for non-residents.
