Residents Can Still Give Input On Parks, Recreation Needs

If you enjoy parks and greenspace, or ever thought, “I wish Johns Creek’s parks had a …” then now is the opportunity to participate in the Parks and Recreation Department’s long-range planning process.

The public is invited to attend one of the city’s master plan workshops designed to govern what type of recreational facilities and programs Johns Creek will invest in over the next decade.

“Parks are one of our most popular services, and this is an opportunity for people to weigh in on what our parks and recreation system will look like in the future,” said City Manager Warren Hutmacher. “The time to share thoughts is now before the plan is approved.”

Johns Creek began gathering public feedback in May, with the help of a consultant who mailed postcards to randomly selected households across the community inviting them to fill out a survey. The city also maintained an open-access version of the survey on the city’s website.

The consultant also attended pre-movie activities at Movies at Newtown Park, the Farmers Market on Saturday mornings and pre-concert festivities at the Amphitheater at Newtown Park to request public feedback.

The consultant is currently analyzing community input and formulating preliminary recommendations on what types of facilities people seem to desire the most (multi-use fields, greenways, adult activity centers, etc.), where they want them placed, what types of programs they want and what recreational priorities the city should set.

Those general concepts, alternatives and preliminary ideas will be presented at a public workshop double-header scheduled for Tuesday, July 21. The presentation will be followed by small-group exercises and discussions.

The times and locations of the workshops are:

• 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Johns Creek Fire Station #62 - Community Room, 10925 Rogers Circle
  
• 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Park Place, Newtown Park, 3125 Old Alabama Road

The draft plan is tentatively expected to be presented to the Mayor and City Council on Aug. 24. The goal is to have the final plan ready by the Sept. 14 regular City Council meeting. Both meetings will include opportunities for public comment.

“The more input we receive from the public the better,” said Hutmacher. “The goal is to invest in ways that a majority of the public desires.”
