Rivermont Celebrates Park Certification

Members of the Rivermont community can be proud that they helped from the National Wildlife Federation.

They'll mark the occasion on Saturday at 10 a.m. with a ceremony at their Barnwell Road neighborhood park, which will receive a bronze sign from the NWF for becoming an official wildlife habitat. 

The 27-acre park sits along the Chattahoochee River with its walking trails connecting to the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area on Barnwell.

"To keep up community spirit – it's really hard right now and house values have gone down but we really want to make sure that Rivermont is prepared when things start coming back," says Shirlee McKinnon, secretary of the Rivermont Community Association. "We just think that Rivermont is such a great destination place for families because it's got so much to offer. And in the end it's all about keeping up home values. . . . It's a fun initiative but it's also serious in the background."

The initiative got started in Johns Creek with Johns Creek Wildlife Habitat Team members working to promote the importance of conservation and wildlife in the community.

The 10 a.m. ceremony at Rivermont Park on Saturday will also include a voter drive.

A ceremony marking the city's designation as a wildlife habitat will take place Tuesday, May 8, at 7 p.m. at 's Community Garden.
