Secretary Of State Ambassadors Hosting Johns Creek Runoff Debate

There will be three runoff elections later this year for the Johns Creek City Council after there was no majority winner in the races.

JOHNS CREEK, GA — After Tuesday's election, all three Johns Creek city council posts have advanced to a run-off election which will be held on Dec. 3. The Secretary of State Ambassadors group will be facilitating a candidate debate to highlight the remaining candidates prior to the election.

The debate will be held at Sankranti Restaurant, 2000 Ray Moss Connector, Johns Creek, on
Nov. 20 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

  • Dilip Tunki and Brian Weaver who are running for the open Post 2 seat vacated by Jay Lin
  • Marybeth Cooper and incumbent Chris Coughlin contending for the Post 4 seat
  • Erin Elwood and Issure C. Yang who are vying for the Post 6 seat vacated by Steve Broadbent

For Johns Creek City Council Post 2, Weaver who received 3,253 votes will face Tunki who received 2,160 votes in a runoff. The third candidate Royce Reinecke took 1,696 votes.

Johns Creek Post 4 incumbent Coughlin received 3,319 votes, and will face Cooper, who had 1,342 votes, in a runoff. Other candidates Adam Thomas had 1,288 votes and Kent Altom with 1,052 votes.

Johns Creek Post 6 saw three vying for the seat, and Elwood took 2,700 votes and will face Yang, who had 2,258 votes, in a runoff. The third candidate Judy LeFave took 2,076 votes.

Student Leadership Johns Creek is part of Leadership Johns Creek, which has been a highly valued part of the city for over 10 years. Student Leadership Johns Creek is a decidedly competitive program that encompasses all four high schools in Johns Creek (Centennial, Chattahoochee, Johns Creek and Northview). Currently there are 100 students participating in this 2-year program.

“The Student Leadership Johns Creek Secretary of State Ambassadors consist of nine of our students who work in conjunction with the Secretary of State’s office to facilitate events to educate and encourage our citizens to become more involved in local politics,” said Executive Director Irene Sanders. “Hosting a candidate debate has become second-nature to this group after hosting multiple city council and state representative debates over the past two years.”
