Shred Documents, Dump Cooking Grease May 13 in Johns Creek

The city will team up with Keep Johns Creek Beautiful and Panera Bread for its event.

JOHNS CREEK, GA -- The city of Johns Creek and Keep Johns Creek Beautiful will team up with Panera Bread Co. this weekend to offer a free document shredding and various recycling service for its residents.

The city's event, set for 9 a.m .to 1 p.m., will be held Saturday, May 13 at the restaurant on Medlock Bridge Road. Along with properly disposing of sensitive documents, you will also have the chance to recycle cooking fats, oils and grease, fluorescent bulbs and gently-used clothes and shoes.

Properly disposing of these cooking oils and grease can prevent them from clogging pipes and causing sewage backups in streets and homes. Additionally, fluorescent tubes and curly compact fluorescent bulbs contain mercury, which lingers in the environment for years. Keep Johns Creek Beautiful has special equipment that destroys the lights and stores the material and gases for recovery later by a certified fluorescent-light recycling firm.
