Smoke Alarms Help Johns Creek Family Escape House Fire

The fire started shortly after midnight on Waters Bend Way.

A Johns Creek family escaped an overnight fire that caused extensive damage to its home.

The family of four was in bed when smoke alarms in their home went off shortly after midnight, the city said in a press release.

The adults smelled smoke coming into the house from the garage and quickly gathered the children and ran outside.

When Johns Creek firefighters arrived on the scene a few minutes later, 60 percent of the three-story house at 385 Waters Bend Way was in flames.

It took firefighters about an hour to bring the blaze under control. The home suffered extensive damage.

“Fortunately, they had working smoke alarms, which probably saved their lives,” said Johns Creek Fire Chief Jeff Hogan. “It could have been a real tragedy. They were asleep. We encourage everyone to have smoke alarms installed in their homes and make sure they’re working.”

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
