St. Pius X Students Participate in Trout Release

The students took part in the Trout in the Classroom program at the National Parks Service's Jones Bridge Unit in Johns Creek.

Approximately 30 students from St. Pius X Catholic High School recently participated in the school's annual Trout Release program at the National Park Service's Jones Bridge location. Trout in the Classroom is an environmental education program, which is sponsored by Trout Unlimited.

Students raise trout from eggs to fry; monitor tank water quality; engage in stream habitat study; learn to appreciate water resources; begin to foster a conservation ethic; and grow to understand ecosystems. Each teacher that participates in the Trout in the Classroom program tailors it to fit his or her curricular needs. Most programs end the year by releasing their trout into a state-approved stream or within a nearby watershed.

During the "trout release," St. Pius X students heard a brief presentation on conservation from Jim Harvey, president of the Upper Chattahoochee Chapter of Trout Unlimited, and perused Bob Foster's insect and fly collections. The event ended with a hands-on fly-casting demonstration with the students.
