State Senate Candidate Raises More Than $135,000

Zahra Karinshak is running for the Senate District 48 seat, which includes parts of Johns Creek and Gwinnett County.

JOHNS CREEK, GA — Georgia State Senate Candidate Zahra Karinshak has raised more than $100,000 as part of her campaign to represent parts of north Fulton and Gwinnett County in the state legislature.

The Air Force veteran and former federal prosecutor is hoping she will be elected to serve State Senate District 48, which includes Berkeley Lake, Duluth, Johns Creek, Lawrenceville, Norcross, Peachtree Corners, and Suwanee. Her candidacy has received more than $135,000 in donations. The seat is currently held by David Shafer, who announced he's seeking the Republican nomination for lieutenant governor in the May 2018 primary.

A 23-year resident of Lawrenceville, Karinshak attended the United States Air Force Academy where she was a soaring flight instructor and then served as an intelligence officer during the first Gulf War. After her military service, Karinshak returned home to Georgia to attend Emory University School of Law. Karinshak’s service continued throughout her career as an attorney to include clerking for a federal judge and serving as counsel to Governor Roy Barnes.

As a federal prosecutor, Karinshak worked to bring justice to victims of human traffickers and child predators. Today, she represents government whistleblowers, saving taxpayers millions while promoting transparency and exposing corruption.

“I am humbled by the incredible support and enthusiasm for my candidacy,” Karinshak said. “Growing up in rural Georgia, I learned the values of integrity, hard work, respect, and service. These values will guide my leadership in the Senate and I will work hard every day to make the district proud. Extreme partisanship and divisive rhetoric have plagued our political system for too long. I want to change that.”
