Student Leadership Johns Creek Learn About City Leadership
SLJC Class of 2018 members spent a day in March learning about the day-to-day operations of Johns Creek.
It was a great day at Johns Creek City Hall on Friday, March 17th as the Class of 2018 members spent the day learning about the day-to-day operations of local government.
Students heard presentations from Mayor Mike Bodker, City Manager Warren Hutmacher, and Johns Creek Advantage CEO Courtney Bernardi, followed by an interactive exercise planning City parks. During the park planning exercise students worked as teams designing parkland in Johns Creek with a budget of $16 million dollars. This was a really great exercise in planning and budgeting within a large city.
The students also received an up-close tour of the Traffic Control Center at Johns Creek City Hall where they saw the intricacies of lights at various intersections throughout the city. Johns Creek Fire Department Deputy Fire Marshal Chris Wall discussed fire operations and training, and talked about various equipment firefighters use in their public safety roles.

The afternoon was spent with the Johns Creek Police Department, where Corporal Kevin Rampley gave the students a lesson in CSI investigations, even letting the students lift prints from various items. Sargeant Ronnie Young gave a collaborative and fun traffic stop demonstration where students witnessed first-hand the importance of a police officers role in maintaining the safety of the citizens as well as themselves. Finally, Sargeant Will Goins brought Johns Creek Police K9 Leo for a demonstration on how the dogs are used to fight crime. Needlesstosay, the students loved Leo!
