Student Leadership Johns Creek Plans Candidate Debate

The debate will highlight the candidates for the House Seat District 50 that was vacated by Brad Raffensperger.

From Student Leadership Johns Creek: Nine students from Student Leadership Johns Creek, who represent all four high schools in Johns Creek, were recently named to represent Johns Creek as members of the Secretary of State Ambassadors.

They attended a kick-off with students from other schools across Georgia at the World Congress Center on September 6th where they were trained in how to register Georgians to vote and engage voter participation in future elections.

The nine students are in the midst of planning a candidate debate on October 9th at Northview High School’s auditorium. The debate will highlight the candidates for the House Seat District 50 that was vacated by Brad Raffensperger when he announced his bid for Secretary of State. The two candidates, Angelika Kausche and Kelly Stewart, will answer questions from our student moderators on relevant issues facing Georgia and in particular, Johns Creek. The evening will begin at 6:30 pm with a candidate meet- and-greet. The debate is scheduled from 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm and is being sponsored in conjunction with the Johns Creek Community Association.

In April, 2018, Secretary of State Ambassadors from Student Leadership Johns Creek were crowned State Champions in a competition that included nearly 200 school groups statewide. The students hosted the first ever student-led candidate debate in the State of Georgia when they completely organized and facilitated a candidate debate for Johns Creek Mayoral and City Council candidates. In addition to being recognized by Secretary of State Brian Kemp for their victory, they received a Commendation from Governor Nathan Deal and a Proclamation from the Johns Creek City Council. A new group of nine students were recently named to represent Student Leadership Johns Creek for the2018-19 Secretary of State Ambassador Program.

The goal of the Secretary of State’s Ambassadors Program is to provide high school students an opportunity to engage as leaders within their school and community. Through this program, the students gain leadership experience by learning about and teaching Georgia civics to their peers, learning about voter registration, and promoting and encouraging other students and residents of Johns Creek to register to vote. The SLJC students will work individually and as a team to create a dialogue that gets first-time voters educated, excited, and engaged in the election process.
