Students Needed For GA Superintendent's Advisory Council

The students will meet with the superintendent to discuss the impact of state policies in the classroom, along with other education issues.

GEORGIA — State School Superintendent Richard Woods is seeking middle and high school students to serve on his 2019-20 Student Advisory Council.

These students will meet with Superintendent Woods to discuss the impact of state policies in the classroom, along with other issues related to education, and will serve as the Superintendent’s ambassadors to their respective schools. Members will also engage in community service projects to benefit Georgia students and schools.

The State Superintendent of Schools' student advisory council is a group of students in grades 7-12 who discuss how decisions made at the state level are affecting students throughout Georgia.

Members meet three times throughout the school year with Woods and are advisors who act as liaisons between the Department of Education and the students of Georgia.

“My Student Advisory Council is a key part of my decision-making as I lead Georgia’s K-12 public education system,” Woods said. “We make better policy choices when we’re connected with those we serve. I deeply value these students’ input and involvement.”

Past topics discussed by the student advisory council include: the school dropout rate, student leadership, communication/messaging, the Georgia graduation rule, testing, school climate, and career, technical, and agricultural education.

Applicants must be enrolled in a Georgia public middle or high school for the 2019-20 school year.
Middle school students will meet Oct. 21, Jan. 15, and March 24 with a joint community service day on May 5. High school students will meet Oct. 22, Jan. 16, and March 25 with a joint community service day on May 5.

Members are chosen by a committee of Georgia Department of Education representatives based on the applicant’s response to questions.
