Time to Get Serious

The end of the Georgia legislative session this past week — Sine Die — marks the official start of the campaigns leading up to the party primaries and special election to be held on May 20, 2014.  Early voting starts April 28th, and Absentee Ballot mailing will begin April 5th, which is only thirteen days away.  The voter registration deadline for new voters is April 21, 2014.

It is now time to get serious about deciding who we want to represent us at the Federal, State, and Local levels of government.  At the Federal level, the marquee races on both the Republican and Democratic primary ballots are for the US Senator position held by Saxby Chambliss, who is retiring.  You may have already seen TV ads by David Perdue and Jack Kingston who are two of several Republican candidates running for this position, and you may have also heard of Michelle Nunn, who is one of several Democratic candidates for the same position.  At the State level, Governor Deal is facing several opponents, and the State School Superintendent is an open position.  It is true, however, that at the Federal, State, and County level, many of the positions are uncontested, and the incumbents will remain in office.

The non-partisan, Johns Creek City Council Special Election to be held on May 20th, in conjunction with the party primaries, should be very important to all of us.  Currently, our City Council is understaffed, with only five of seven seats filled; and it is facing very important zoning decisions involving the intersection of Old Alabama and Medlock Bridge/SR141, and Rogers Bridge Road that will significantly impact our traffic, schools and the character of Johns Creek.  Work on the annual city budget needs to begin in June, and the Mayor has started a conversation about a future vision of the city, which may include putting more “urban in suburban” and high-rise buildings in Technology Park/Johns Creek.

I look forward to hearing your views on these and other city matters so that I can best represent you on Post 6 on City Council.  I started my door-to-door campaign this weekend by visiting ten neighborhoods, and I look forward to meeting many more involved and caring residents throughout the city in the next eight brief weeks.
