JOHNS CREEK, GA -- The planned traffic shift for Old Alabama Road in Johns Creek has been postponed, the Georgia Department of Transportation said.

Contractors are in the process of completing utility work before the shift can take place, which GDOT spokesperson Annalysce Baker notes said "will reduce the need to close lanes after the traffic shift to perform the work."

Georgia DOT contractors will reschedule the shift to occur at a future date.

The change, originally set to take place Tuesday, Aug. 9, involves eastbound traffic traveling toward S.R. 141/Medlock Bridge Road on Old Alabama Road moving on to the newly paved lanes.

The single westbound lane -- traffic traveling toward Jones Bridge Road -- will remain in the current configuration.

The current eastbound lanes will close to allow contractors to build a median and move to the third phase of construction.

The project includes widening Old Alabama Road from three lanes to four lanes separated by a 20-foot wide median.

A 5-foot wide sidewalk will be constructed next to the eastbound lanes and 10-foot multi-use trail will be built adjacent to the westbound lanes. A left turn lane will be added on Medlock Bridge Road to Old Alabama Road.

The project will accommodate the volume of traffic traveling from SR 141/Medlock Bridge Road to Old Alabama Road, GDOT states.

There will be message boards in place to inform motorist about the upcoming change.
