Kennesaw Author Hits Home with Self-Esteem Message
Samantha DeGrasse wants kids to feel good about themselves and wrote a book to convey that message.
Samantha DeGrasse dealt with some self-esteem issues while growing up in the Bronx, New York. Now, as an adult, she has put her writing skills to work to teach young children that it's OK to be different.
DeGrasse, 29, of Kennesaw, has written "Taber is Beautiful," the story about a horse who struggles with a facial flaw–a mole on her nose. With an encouraging mother and friends who never leave her side, Taber learns the importance of inner beauty and inner strength.
"The horse symbolizes strength and the mole on her nose makes her look different than everyone else," said DeGrasse, who is the mother of Jaden, 8, and Sophia, 4. "The message is to always be yourself, no matter what."

DeGrasse moved to Kennesaw from New York seven years ago. During her work as a preschool teacher, she realized that self-esteem issues begin as early as age four. "Self-esteem is a huge isssue, especially with special needs children with autism and HDAD."
In 2006, DeGrasse self-published her first children's book, "Jordan and the Red Silk Scarf." In 2011, she followed up with her second book. Both books, geared to ages 4 to 9, are available at major online booksellers like Amazon and Barnes and Noble.

DeGrasse recently hired a literary agent and has also been speaking in schools and at local library events. Her hope is to create a clothing line and animated children's show to go with her book about Taber. "God has opened so many doors with organizations, because they believe in this message, too," said DeGrasse.
She will be at several events at the Chick-fil-A Restaurant on Dallas Highway this month–Oct. 18, 25, and a family fun night on Oct. 27.
