In April, hundreds of volunteer students, their families, and staff members descended upon Big Shanty to beautify the campus. Volunteers planted trees near the sports track for erosion control and flowers in the front and side to beautify the grounds, creating a sensory garden on the other side for Special Education students, and filling in a bog in the back.

Other volunteers painted the front awning and hallway and installed shelving in the bathrooms. Funding for the multi-project event was made possible through a Comcast Foundation grant. Big Shanty was one of 30 schools selected nationally as recipient of Comcast Cares Day. Comcast donated $7,500 to fund the needed supplies for the projects.
