Students enrolled in KSU’s Medical Assisting Certificate program will have access to a state-of-the-art classroom. The next course begins Oct. 13 and is offered through KSU’s College of Continuing and Professional Education.

Andrea Cochran, director of healthcare programs, said the classroom’s design and resources allow for students to gain real-world experience. She said, “The medical field is growing at a rapid pace, and employers want people who can jump right in. The resources they have in our classroom will give our learners a competitive edge in the marketplace.” The classroom features a doctor’s office setup, exam stations
and front-office area simulation.

The Medical Assisting program’s structure includes lecture from multiple instructors who are active in the medical field. Students will also receive practical training by learning to capture vital signs and measurements, venipuncture, laboratory procedures, electrocardiography, and assisting with examinations and procedures. The last 2 months of the program include a 180-hour externship in a medical office or urgent care facility.

“Our instructors will also help students prepare for the National Healthcareer Association Certified Clinical Medical Assistant exam,” Cochran said. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports employment of medical assistants is expected to grow by 31% from 2010-20, faster than the average for all occupations.
