New Classes at KSU's Continuing Education

A New Year brings new opportunities for individuals seeking to gain additional skills and training

The College of Continuing and Professional Education at KSU is excited to unveil several new classes covering a wide range of subjects, from hospitality and healthcare to web design and technology.

“Starting a new year allows us the opportunity to evaluate where we are and where we are going,” Continuing Education Dean Barbara Calhoun said. “We are proud to offer a multitude of new courses that will provide individuals the skills and training they need to take the next step forward.”

The following is a list of some of the many new offerings offered at the college.

Certificate Programs:

Restaurant Operations and Management (starting in April) – If you’re interested in front-of-house restaurant operations, this new certificate program will help you get started. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median yearly salary for food service managers in 2015 was $48,690 with limited (less than five years) work experience required. With a thorough understanding of the industry, graduates of this course will be able to navigate all aspects of restaurant management, from controlling costs to working with customers.

Supply Chain Management (starting in April) – This certificate training course is designed to benefit individuals who desire to enter or advance in the field by providing the foundation to gain introductory level experience in the supply chain industry. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual wage for logisticians was $74,260 in May 2015.

Pharmacy Technician (daytime offering) – In this program, students will gain the skills needed to become a Pharmacy Technician in either the hospital or retail setting. Beginning in May, this certificate training program will be offered in a condensed daytime format.

Certified Nursing Assistant (daytime offering) – As a result of the growing elderly population, many certified nursing assistants will be needed in long-term care facilities and hospitals to help enhance the lives of patients. In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports employment of certified nursing assistants is projected to grow 21% through 2022. Beginning this summer, this certificate training program will also be offered in a condensed daytime format.

Ethical Hacker (starting in August) – Enter the world of ethical hacking – a role expected to grow 18% through 2024 with an average salary of $90,000+ per year (Bureau of Labor Statistics). By identifying weaknesses and vulnerabilities in target systems, you will use the same methods and tools as a malicious hacker, but in a lawful and ethical manner to evaluate the target system’s security. This certificate program is scheduled to begin in August.

Web Design & Development Classes:

Photoshop Essentials – In this course, you will learn to take your web design and photography skills to the next level using Adobe Photoshop Creative Cloud. By the end of the class, you will be comfortable using Photoshop commands, tools, and panels to create and enhance your artwork and photography.

Dreamweaver Essentials – Learn to create and manage websites using Adobe’s powerful Web Design software. You will create pages independently or with templates, enhance designs, organize files, identify links for easy navigation and add interactivity.

WordPress Essentials – Want to build an attractive, sophisticated blog or website – without having to learn any special coding? Learn the essentials of WordPress, a free and popular Web Design tool, to quickly and easily create attractive blogs and interactive websites. By the end of the course, you’ll know how to use WordPress confidently to launch and maintain your own blog or interactive website.

PHP & MySQL Essentials – Learn how to create dynamic, interactive websites using PHP and a MySQL database server. During the course, you’ll walk through the development of a complete content management system Web application. You’ll receive clear, step-by-step, instructions demonstrating how to create a complete website capable of dynamically displaying data from a MySQL database.
