Newt Gingrich: Pray for Hillary Clinton

The former Georgia congressman and U.S. House Speaker held a town hall Monday at Kennesaw State University.

KENNESAW, GA — Former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich asked an audience at Kennesaw State University to pray for Hillary Clinton.

“Take a little time to include in your prayers Secretary Clinton,” said Gingrich, according to the AJC's account. “She’s not our enemy. I was a little concerned yesterday.”

On Sunday, Clinton left New York City's 9/11 memorial early after feeling overheated, with a video later emerging showing the Democratic nominee stumbling and perhaps even fainting. Later, the Clinton campaign said she had been diagnosed on Friday with pneumonia — something the press slammed the campaign for because it had not been previously disclosed.

In an interview on Monday morning, Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump simply said that he "hopes she gets well soon."

Gingrich held a well-publicized town hall meeting on Monday. He said he hopes Clinton recovers from her illness.

“We want to defeat her fairly and honestly,” he said to cheers.

Gingrich had been rumored to be on Trump's list of potential vice presidential running mates, before Trump named Indiana Gov. Mike Pence as his No. 2 at the Republican National Convention.

Gingrich began his career in Cobb County, Georgia, as a Republican congressman. He almost single-handedly engineered an historic Republican takeover of the U.S. House of Representatives in the 1990s after decades of Democratic control.
