Black Knights Rout Bears in Lawrenceville Battle

Westmoreland, Morris key in 54-14 victory for Central Gwinnett.

Coming into the season, knew they would be an improved team with hopes of making the playoffs. But playing their cross-town rival was no easy task. Central defeated the Bears last year and Mountain View had revenge on their mind. But just 1:58 into the game George Morris scored from a yard out and the Knights went on to a 54-14 shellacking.

Morris scored four touchdowns in the victory as Central built a 20-0 lead after the first period. Morris' first score came as Central drove the length of the field and he plunged in from a yard out. The Bears drove to midfield but after a sack pushed them back to the 34 yard line, Justin Brownlee scooped up a blocked punt by Francis Kallon and rumbled in for the score. The 2-point conversion was missed and Central led 12-0.

Central got the ball back again and junior quarterback Eman Westmoreland found Malachi Jones for a 22-yard touchdown. Louis McGee caught the 2-point conversion with 9.6 seconds and Central led 20-0. The Black Knights opened it upt 27-0 when Morris picked up a 5-yard touchdown after a Mountain View turnover. Charles DeLoach added the PAT for the 27-0 lead.

The Bears didn't give up as Marvin Elam scored on two 2-yard runs to cut the lead to 27-14 at intermission. The Bears had the ball to start the third period but another fumble recovery by Chase Brown caused by Trey Johnson, set up another Central score. Westmoreland found McGee on a corner pattern for a 20-yard touchdown to give Central a 34-14 lead. Another turnover and Morris scampered in from 13 and 6 to close out the quarter leading 47-0. The latter touchdown was set up by an interception by J.B. Ezell to the 4-yard line. One play later Morris scored his fourth touchdown of the night.

With the running clock in the fourth period, Central went to back up quarterback Nate Hartford and he found Adam Riley on a short screen pass that Riley turned into a 71 yard touchdown for the final 54-14 score.

Morris had 13 carries for 80 yards and four touchdowns. "We are trying to get better and working hard," said Central coach Todd Wofford. "Our defense got a lot of flack last year and that is what is motivating us and we want to stand up and take pride and get to the ball. Francis Kallon was playing in his first ever game and has already signed to play at Georgia Tech. All he did in the first half was have a sack, three tackles and a blocked punt. "He did pretty darn good for his first time. I think it was a pretty solid start," Wofford said. "Our coaches had a game plan and in the first half we had everything scripted and it worked like clock work. They (Mountain View) have a pretty good team and some good players. They will be fine."

Central is 1-0 in the young season and will travel to Douglasville to play Chapel Hill in a rematch of last year's shootout while Mountain View (0-1) will play their other in-town rival, .
