LAWRENCEVILLE, GA β€” What school officials described as a small brush fire broke out Monday on the campus of Georgia Gwinnett College.

The fire was in a wooded area north of Lonnie Harvel Boulevard. A short section of the roadway was closed to traffic Monday afternoon.

Gwinnett County Fire & Emergency Services crews arrived at about 11:30 a.m. and had the fire under control by 12:16 p.m.

The exact cause of the fire was undetermined, but may have been sparked by wildlife coming into contact with a high-tension power line.

A brief power surge was reported in the area prior to the fire, officials said.

The blaze burned about 1 1/2-2 acres of brush before being extinguished, the fire department said.

No injuries had been reported Monday afternoon and no campus buildings were believed to be threatened.

Students were informed to stay in place and avoid the area. Classes and normal activities on the campus were not impacted, the college said in a public statement.

Much of north Georgia is currently under a wildfire warning, with a persistent drought and high winds making wildfire conditions more likely.
