The City of Lawrenceville is seeking interested applicants for a contractual position as a Part-Time Chief Municipal Court Judge. The Lawrenceville Municipal Court currently holds sessions twice on Tuesday and once each on Wednesday and Thursday. Depending on case load, each session varies in length but generally does not exceed three hours. Payment amount is $350 - $500 per court session, depending on experience and qualifications.

Job Description and Preferred Qualifications for the Municipal Court Judge

Applicants should be admitted to the Bar of Georgia, have a minimum of five (5) years of experience practicing law, be willing to undergo an extensive background check and be able to attend training to get ICJA (Institute of Continuing Judicial Education) certification within twelve (12) months of appointment. Continuing, yearly education to maintain certification is required.

  • On a part-time basis, preside in court one to three days per week in conformance with Uniform Rules for the Municipal Courts of Georgia.
  • Should have substantive knowledge of the traffic laws of the State of Georgia.
  • Should have substantive knowledge in criminal law, traffic trial practice, and evidence.
  • Should have substantive knowledge to execute and issue warrants for arrest, subpoenas, revocation of probation, and bond forfeitures.
  • Should demonstrate ability to protect rights of pro se defendants and efficiently manage large court dockets.
  • Should be able to utilize and adapt to the use of technology to conduct court proceedings.
  • Must submit to background check and be GCIC eligible.
  • Understanding and knowledge of the International Property Maintenance Code, local ordinances and zoning regulations is preferred.
