Fire Ravages Two-Story Lawrenceville Home

A mother and four children were at home at the time of the fire, but all escaped.

A mother and four children who were eating dinner escaped a Tuesday house fire in Lawrenceville that caused heavy damage to their two story home.

Firefighters arrived at the home, on the 1100 block of Balvaird Drive SE, at 4:23 p.m. to find the second floor and attic engulfed in heavy flames.

The fire appears to have started in a second-floor bedroom of the two-story woodframe home, according to Gwinnett County Fire & Emergency Services.

The fire caused “heavy damage” to the second floor and attic and “extensive” smoke and water damage on the home’s main floor.

The family was outside when firefighters arrived. Fire officials say the mother was alerted to the blaze by an upstairs fire alarm and was able to get her children to safety. Firefighters had the blaze under control by 4:47 p.m.

The Red Cross was contacted to assist the family, who were displaced by the fire. The family also was receiving aid from 12-Stone Church, where they are members.
