Gas Leak Reported Near Georgia Gwinnett College (Updated)

A gas main was struck by workers digging to lay sewer lines at a construction site.

Gwinnett firefighters responded to a natural gas leak Wednesday afternoon near Georgia Gwinnett College

The leak was reported around 3 p.m. in the 1000 block of Collins Hill Road, forcing the closure of the road and the precautionary evacuation of 30 people who were at the college’s sports complex directly across the street.

Gwinnett Fire Capt. Tommy Rutledge said the leak was caused by a contracting crew that struck a 6-inch gas main line while digging to lay sewer lines at a construction site for the new Gwinnett County Fire Station #31, which is being built across the street from GGC.
