Gas Leak Shuts Down Traffic in Downtown Lawrenceville

A utility crew struck a four-inch gas line Thursday morning, firefighters say.

LAWRENCEVILLE, GA — A utility crew struck a gas line in downtown Lawrenceville on Thursday, shutting down the area while repairs could be made.

Gwinnett Fire & Emergency Services was called at 9:44 a.m. to a report of a natural gas leak on Luckie Street SW at Jackson Street.

A utility crew had struck a four-inch, high-pressure gas line while boring close to the roadway, fire officials said. They found a strong odor of gas and an active leak when they arrived.

As an emergency crew from Lawrenceville Gas worked to repair the leak, firefighters monitored gas readings and established a "hot zone" perimeter.

Two houses nearby were sheltered in place, but did not have to be evacuated.

Jackson Street was closed between East Crogan Street and Scenic Highway and several side streets, including Chestnut, Atha and Luckie, also were shut down.

The leak was stopped at 11:37 a.m. and the roads were reopened just before noon.

There were no injuries reported.
