Gwinnett Deputy Accused Of Sex With Inmate

Terry Henderson, 40, is charged with sexual assault and violation of oath of office.

LAWRENCEVILLE, GA β€” A former Gwinnett County sheriff's deputy was arrested Monday on charges he illegally had sex with an inmate.

Terry Henderson, 40, turned himself in at the sheriff's office in Butts County, where the offense allegedly happened.

On September 14, the inmate told jail officials that she had engaged in sexual activity with Henderson when he was transporting her to the Gwinnett County Jail from another facility in south Georgia, according to a news release.

When it was determined the activity allegedly happened in Butts County, investigators presented the case to the Butts County district attorney's office, which determined there was probably cause to proceed with a criminal prosecution.

Henderson, a 12-year veteran of the Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office, was fired on September 26.

He is charged with violation of oath of office and sexual assault. He's being held at the Butts County Detention Center.

Gwinnett County Sheriff Butch Conway said deputies are expected to conduct themselves according to the policies governing their offices.

"While I am extremely disappointed with the actions of Terry Henderson, I am mindful of the many deputies who serve our community each day with excellence," Conway said in the news release.
