Gwinnett Fire: Day Care Center Evacuated, Home Extensively Damaged

Gwinnett Fire crews dealt with three fire calls Thursday morning in Duluth, Snellville and Lawrenceville.

The following is a brief synopsis of the fire response activity for Thursday morning, from Gwinnett Fire PIO Capt. Tommy Rutledge.

BUSINESS FIRE

Firefighters responded at 9:36 a.m. to report of a business fire at the Sunshine House, in the 2900 block of West Main Street, SW in Snellville. The caller advised of a smoke odor inside the building and evacuation of children and staff in progress. Crews found nothing showing from a one-story daycare center on arrival. The source was found to be a faulty HAVC motor on the exterior rear-side of the structure. One staff member was evaluated at the scene by paramedics after breathing in some of the smoke. The woman breathed in smoke as she discovered the HVAC unit smoking on the outside of the building. There was no sign of smoke or fire inside the daycare. The children and staff were allowed to return to the building within a few minutes. Additional fire equipment was cancelled once the scene was declared under control.

HOUSE FIRE

Firefighters responded at 10:21 a.m. to an occupant report of a house fire in the 1500 block of Academic Court, SW in Lawrenceville. The caller reported a power outage and smoke inside the house. Crews found nothing showing from the exterior on arrival. The source was found to be an electrical short in a power strip on the second floor. There were no injuries reported.

Equipment at the scene included: 3-Engines, 1-Ladder Truck, 1-Squad, 1-Medic Unit, 2-Battalion Chiefs

HOUSE FIRE

Firefighters responded at 10:28 a.m. to a neighbor report of a house fire in the 3900 block of Noblin Ridge Drive, NW in Duluth. The caller reported flames visible. Crews found heavy fire involvement in the garage of a two-story house on arrival. No one was home at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported. Firefighters made a fast-attack on the fire, but not before the flames extended to part of the living space. The exact cause is currently undetermined and is under investigation. The fire caused extensive damage to the garage and part of the homes living space.
