Gwinnett Inmate Captured after Nine-Hour Escape
Alexander Goodwin assumed the identity of his cellmate, who was scheduled for release, and went to Rockdale County.

LAWRENCEVILLE, GA -- A Gwinnett County inmate is back in custody after spending nearly nine hours on the run Thursday.
Inmate Alexander Goodwin, 27, was accidentally released from Gwinnett County Correctional Institute after he swapped identities with his cellmate, who was scheduled for release, the Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office said.
It was the second time Goodwin has tried to escape, authorities say.

He was captured Thursday afternoon after deputies tracked him to a home in Rockdale County.
Goodwin was serving time on a February arrest for probation violation and had been sentenced to a work-release program.

Authorities say that when Goodman learned his cellmate was scheduled for release early Thursday, he assumed the cellmate's identity and was processed for release. An investigation is ongoing to determine whether he and his cellmate conspired, or if Goodman acted alone.
When deputies arrived at the Rockdale County home where he was staying, Goodwin jumped into a nearby vehicle and fled, striking a Rockdale County deputy with his vehicle.
After a chase, Rockdale County Sheriff's Office deputies placed Goodwin under arrest.
He is currently receiving medical treatment in Rockdale County for injuries sustained when his vehicle rolled over at the end of the chase.
In a news release, the Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office said it is reviewing its release procedures to ensure all inmates are released properly.
