Hurricane Irma: Gwinnett Schools Make Decision on Thursday Classes

Classes were canceled in Gwinnett Monday-Wednesday because of power outages and road closures in the county.

LAWRENCEVILLE, GA — After being closed since last week due to Hurricane Irma, Gwinnett County schools will be back in session on Thursday.

On its website and social media, the Gwinnett County School System announced Wednesday that classes would resume as normal on Thursday morning.

On Tuesday, the system announced Wednesday would be another day off due to "power outages we are still experiencing in some areas of the county and transportation concerns on secondary roads."

Things had improved in the county by Wednesday, although two dozen Gwinnett County roads were still closed Wednesday morning. The number of Georgia Power customers without electricity in Gwinnett County was down to about 8,800 by 4 p.m. Wednesday, according to the company's outage map.
