No Charges Expected Against Homeowner Who Shot Intruder: Police

No charges are expected against a homeowner who shot and killed an intruder Friday.

LAWRENCEVILLE, GA — Police say no charges are expected and both the homeowner-shooter and intruder have been identified in a homicide that happened early Friday morning in Lawrenceville.

The resident and shooter has been identified as Robert Morton, 20, of Lawrenceville. He resides at the home with other family members. The deceased has been identified as James Brock, 50, of Gainesville. Notification has been made to his next-of-kin.

Brock’s motivations for choosing the Morton residence are still unclear, according to police.

An intruder was shot and killed early Friday morning when a Lawrenceville man discovered a man breaking into a vehicle in his driveway on Mayfield Farms Drive, Lawrenceville, according to Gwinnett County Police Department. No identification has been made on the intruder yet. He is a middle-aged, white man.

Friday at approximately 1 a.m., a resident of 205 Mayfield Farms Drive came home and went inside, according to the police report. He was upstairs and heard a noise downstairs. He grabbed his firearm and went to investigate. He ultimately encountered an intruder outside breaking into a vehicle in the driveway.

After verbally challenged the intruder, the intruder charged at the resident and the resident fired more than one shot striking the intruder. The intruder died on scene.

The resident has been taken to police headquarters and is cooperating with detectives.

The Crime Scene unit is processing the scene. The Medical Examiner’s office and the District Attorney’s office are on scene as well.
